Island Harvest is the largest hunger relief organization on Long Island. By relying on volunteers, in-kind services, and donated food, we devote 97 cents of every dollar contributed directly to our programs. The organization's volunteers and staff deliver millions of pounds of food to a network of 600+ Long Island-based food pantries, soup kitchens, and other non-profit organization that offer feeding services for those in need. The organization attacks hunger uses a variety of strategic programs such as the Weekend Backpack Feeding Program, which provides over 35, 000 packs of nutritious food to schoolchildren on the weekends. Some of the community friendly programs offered by Island Harvest include: Summer Food Service, Free Tax Preparation and monthly Finding Solutions Education workshops.Island Harvest works with government assistance agencies in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties to provide food to those in need, some of those agencies include:- Loule, Health and Welfare Council of Long Island (Food Stamps)- WIC Programs- CFSP Program- National School Breakfast and Lunch Program- Head Start Program- Energy Efficiency Programs- Interfaith Nutrition Network, which has 19 soup kitchen locations and other programs to assist people in need Island Harvest was created in 1992 by Linda Breitstone, who was appalled to see local convenience stores throwing away food at the end of the day despite there being a food kitchen down the street.
